Hermione Jean Granger is a Muggle-born witch in the ‘Harry Potter’ universe. She is best friends with Harry Potter and Ronald Weasley, and a fiercely adept witch (despite her Muggle-born status).
Hermione has come extremely close to death multiple times throughout the ‘Harry Potter’ books and films, but thankfully she survives each one.
Who Is Hermione?
Hermione was born an only child on September 19, 1979, to Mr and Mrs Granger, two Muggle dentists.
At age 11, Hermione received an invitation to attend Hogwarts. She began her studies there in September 1991, graduating later in 1997.
Hermione is incredibly intelligent and studious, and took to studying magic even before arriving at Hogwarts – leading to some very impressed teachers and fellow pupils!

Hermione meets Ron Weasley and Harry Potter during her first day, on the train to Hogwarts. The trio quickly become friends and these extremely close bonds last between them for life.
Alongside helping Harry and Ron defeat Lord Voldemort, Dementors, Death Eaters and other formidable foes, Hermione is involved in many activities inside and outside of Hogwarts, including:being a Gryffindor Prefect, being a founding member of Dumbledore’s Army, setting up S.P.E.W (the Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare), Reading Hogwarts: A History, and maintaining friendships and romantic relationships.
What Is Hermione Like?
Hermione is a character of significant intellectual prowess, excelling at Hogwarts and extra-curricular activities alike. In her third year of school, The Ministry of Magic even allowed Hermione to have a Time-Turner (a device that can rewind time), to enable her to take extra classes.
Hermione is compassionate, as can be seen through her work with S.P.E.W. and her deep care for Ron and Harry. Hermione often proves crucial in solving mysteries that she and the two boys face.
Hermione is a skilled witch: she solved Severus Snape’s riddle in the first book, and successfully brewed a Polyjuice Potion (a very difficult thing to do!) when she was just a mere second-year student.
Though Hermione is quite comfortable with her Muggle-born status, it can become an issue – especially when Draco Malfoy is concerned. She can often suffer discrimination at the hands of Draco, and has been known to slap him on occasion.
Hermione is no pushover, and has strong opinions on a variety of topics. She is loyal, caring and brave, and a crucial member of the Harry-Ron-Hermione trio.
What Does Hermione Look Like?
Hermione has brown eyes, bushy brown hair and in her youth, had large buck teeth.
In 1994, Madam Pomfrey shrunk down Hermione’s front teeth to counteract an accidental Densaugeo spell (a hex that lengthens your teeth). Hermione let the spell shrink her teeth down to average size, thus eliminating her distinctive buck-teeth.
Hermione generally wears her school uniform, and carries a bag of books on her back.
Hermione’s Hogwarts robes are designed with the Gryffindor colours of red and gold, and in the books it is canon that she would be wearing a black pointed hat during the day (this is not portrayed in the films).
How Does Hermione (Almost) Die?
Throughout the ‘Harry Potter’ series, Hermione enters into incredibly dangerous situations, many times being lucky to escape with her life.
Some of these include: her encounter with the huge three-headed dog Fluffy, being petrified by Salazer Slytherin’s Basilisk, almost being eaten by Lupin in werewolf form, getting tortured to near-death by Bellatrix Lestrange, nearly getting stabbed by Bellatrix Lestrange, having a close encounter with the Gringott’s dragon, destroying Voldemort’s Horcruxes (the cursed objects put up a serious fight!), duelling Bellatrix Lestrange and nearly getting eaten by Nagini (Voldemort’s pet snake).
Phew, you may need to take a breath after all that!
What Are Hermione’s Abilities?
Hermione is an exceptionally talented witch.
She has great magical aptitude, both within classes and outside the classroom walls – at times not even needing a wand or magical instrument to assist her with spell-casting.
Hermione is especially talented in transfiguration, and in her first year at Hogwarts she was the first of her class to transfigure a match into a needle.
Hermione’s skill is apparent especially when one looks at what she did for her Muggle parents: to protect them from the Death Eaters, Hermione altered their memories – editing herself out of them and giving them new identities. The level of skill and personal willpower a spell like this would need is astonishing.
What Has Hermione Done Since Attending Hogwarts?
As soon as the coast is safe and clear, Hermione reaches out to her parents and reverses her memory charm, restoring their memories.
She returns to Hogwarts, and begins a career in the Ministry of Magic in the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures, and later in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement.
Hermione marries Ron Weasley, and they have two children together; Hugo and Rose. Both children also attend Hogwarts.
