Applejack is a female pony from Earth, and one of the main characters of ‘My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic’. She is from a close family, and lives with her grandmother Granny Smith, her older brother Big McIntosh, her younger sister Apple Bloom, and her dog Winona.
It is never expressly stated in the show what happened to Applejack’s parents (Bright Mac and Pear Butter) or where they are now, and even the show’s creator Lauren Faust has said the show is unlikely to address this topic.
With that being said though, there are hints in the show that Applejack’s parents have died – albeit not with information as to how.
Who Is Applejack?
Applejack is a female pony from Earth, who lives and works at Sweet Apple Acres with her family; Granny Smith, Big McIntosh, Apple Bloom and her dog Winona.
She is a main character in the My Little Pony series, and second in command of the Mane 6 (a group of six ponies, each pony representing one of the six elements of harmony). Applejack represents honesty.
Applejack was the last pony in her class to get her ‘cutie mark’ (a symbol obtained by each pony once they discover a unique characteristic about themselves that sets them apart from others), and this was a cause of great difficulty for her.
She left home and moved to Manhattan to try to discover both the mark and herself, but became very homesick. She returned home to the farm, and in doing so realized it’s where she truly belongs – thus earning her her cutie mark.
Applejack first meets Twilight Sparkle (the central main character of ‘My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic’) while checking up on food preparations for the Summer Sun Celebration, and the two become firm friends.
What Is Applejack Like?
Applejack is reliable and hard-working. She is very headstrong – sometimes to a fault, as she won’t ask for help even if she needs it. She has a South American accent.
Applejack is kind and considerate, and as a representation of honesty, she is not one to lie.
Applejack does lack patience for aggressive or rude behaviour, and can sometimes be ill-tempered.
What Does Applejack Look Like?
Applejack has light-orange fur with a yellow ponytailed tail and mane. She has green eyes, white freckles on her cheeks and wears a brown cowboy hat to remind her of home. Her cutie mark is three red apples on her haunch.
As a young horse, Applejack looks very similar, but with more freckles and without her hat or cutie mark.
What Happened To Applejack’s Parents?
In season 3, episode 8 of ‘My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic’, “Apple Family Reunion”, the final scene shows a view of Sweet Apple Acres, as two shooting stars shoot across the sky. These stars are meant to symbolize Applejack’s parents, storyboard artist Sabrina Alberghetti says.
In season 7 episode 13, “The Perfect Pear”, Bright Mac and Pear Butter appear in flashbacks. Their story is depicted to have been a Romeo and Juliet-style romance, with their respective families engaged in a feud.
Although we don’t know for certain what happened to Applejack’s parents, it does seem that they have died somehow. Regardless though, they must have been some pretty great ponies to create a pony like Applejack!
What Are Applejack’s Skills?
Applejack is incredibly strong, due to years of apple-bucking at the farm. She is athletic, skilled with a lasso, and very good at herding – she once stopped a cow stampede with only the help of Winona, her dog (“Applebuck Season”: episode 4 of season 1 of ‘My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic’)!
Applejack is adept at multiple musical instruments, such as the fiddle, banjo and guitar. She has an alter ego named Apple Chord, who is a famous guitar player.
Applejack is also an expert cook – fortunately, as she’s known to have an extremely large appetite!
Honesty is personified in Applejack, and she is truly a genuine and kind character.
What Does Applejack Appear In?
Applejack appears in nearly all of the ‘My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic’ episodes. She also stars in ‘My Little Pony: The Movie’ and ‘My Little Pony: Pony Life’.
Additionally, she plays a supporting role in ‘My Little Pony: Equestria Girls’.
